Expansion of Supportive Housing
For over 30 years, ECS has been at the forefront of San Francisco’s efforts to address the homelessness crisis. We follow the fundamental belief that everyone should have equal access to opportunity, ensuring homelessness is a brief, one-time, and rare event. At the end of 2020, ECS provided 1,146 units of supportive housing to families and individuals across 14 sites in San Francisco. Permanent supportive housing is a proven intervention that combines affordable housing solutions with wraparound support services as a permanent housing exit for people experiencing chronic homelessness in our community.
The units we currently provide are only a fraction of the housing needed, and as a leader in San Francisco’s plan to create additional units of permanent supportive housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, ECS is uniquely positioned to significantly increase the number of homes we provide. In fact, ECS and our partners are poised to double the number of housing units we provide to 2,313 in 19 total supportive housing sites this year. These new residences include:
- The Granada, a 232-room hotel for single adults, for which ECS and the City and County of San Francisco were awarded $45 million from the State of California’s Project HomeKey to purchase
- The Diva, a 130-room hotel for single adults, for which ECS and San Francisco were awarded $29 million from Project HomeKey to purchase
- The Post Hotel with 89 units for single adults
- 600 7th Street, a new 200-unit supportive housing building constructed by Mercy Housing with 100 units for single adults and 20 units for families formerly experiencing homelessness, for which ECS will provide support services. (The remaining 80 units will provide affordable housing for low-income families)
and
- 1064 Mission Street, in partnership with Mercy Housing, which provides 256 studio apartments for single adults (103 dedicated to seniors)
Additionally, ECS continues to collaborate with other organizations to provide housing services and case management. For Mercy Housing’s upcoming 833 Bryant Street, a 144-unit residence for single adults, ECS will be providing case management and support services.
This is only the beginning of our supportive housing strategy. We will be sharing more in the coming months.
